Wastewater structures need protection that reflects the conditions they will actually face. Pipes, manholes, channels, tanks and treatment areas can be exposed to moisture, corrosive gases, chemicals and abrasive solids for long periods.

Start With the Wastewater Environment

An older sewage tunnel, for example, may present very different installation constraints from a newly manufactured precast manhole even though both require protection from corrosive wastewater conditions.

Give Joints and Penetrations Proper Attention

Continuity matters most where the liner is interrupted.

Pipe connections, construction joints, corners, penetrations and transitions can be more demanding than the main wall or floor area. These details need to maintain the protective barrier while still allowing the liner to be installed, joined and inspected properly.

They should be resolved in the project documentation rather than left entirely to decisions on-site.

This is especially important in wastewater infrastructure, where a weak detail around a penetration or seam can undermine protection even when the surrounding liner is performing as intended.

Plan Inspection Around Liner Continuity

Inspection should focus on the parts of the system where continuity can be affected.

Seams, welded joints, penetrations, pipe connections and terminations all need a clear inspection approach before work begins. The project specification should also state what records or verification are required at handover.

This gives the contractor, engineer and asset owner the same reference point throughout the work.

For confined wastewater structures, access for inspection should also be considered when the installation sequence is planned.

Bring the Liner Strategy Into the Project Early

Concrete protection is easier to coordinate when it is considered alongside the wastewater structure from the beginning.
